08.11.2020 (une insomnie) by Yann Gourdon is the musical laying out of a rule - a process which is neither exclusively prescriptive nor descriptive. It is a mixture of both, and because of this, more. It is a rule for defining the sublation of the understanding that anhedonia is the other face of catharsis. In insomnia, none take precedence over another; both are abstractions of the most rarefied type; uncommunicative emotional entropy. The monumentally squalid drone piece transforms this intellectual dejection of romantic proportions into the time which did not exist in them, by virtue of the redundancy gained in duration and repetition. Such time, in turn, presents the expressibility of the two-valuedness of anhedonia and catharsis, when allowing for the intelligibility of two times inside the piece's frame. We are listening and thinking in a there and in a when which are coextensive with a here and a now, categorically orthogonal to the piece's dimensional collapse. The monotonic undertow of the romantic is eversed into a harmonic hydra out of time. In insomnia, we are now alert, before what it is which must be done.
